Nokia 6301 with VOIP / UMA

The Nokia 6301 is a version of the hugely popular Nokia 6300, but now with added WiFi which allows the 6301 to access VOIP calls over a UMA gateway.. or to put it in more simple terms, the Nokia 6301 can make cheap voice calls over the internet. Most readers will be familiar with the 6300 so we won't dwell for too long on the 6301's technical details other than to briefly say that it has a 240x320 pixel display, 2 megapixel camera, microSD expandable memory (128MB in the box), an FM radio and Bluetooth. The WiFi circuitry in the Nokia 6301 adds just 2 grams to the handset's weight, coming in at 93 grams. Cosmetically, the Nokia 6301 comes in a colour scheme called "Cocoa" which is subtly different from the 6300's silver/black colour combination. Both the 6300 and 6301 are quite elegant and understated phones. Setting up a UMA gateway is probably not the sort of thing that most people would want to do at home, but fear not - the Nokia 6301 will first be offered...

Palm Treo 500 / 500v

The Palm Treo 500 represents something of a change in direction for Palm. It's not just that the Treo 500 looks different from previous Treo smartphones, but it's much smaller than previous devices and it's the first Palm device that we can think of that doesn't have a touchscreen. It's a Windows Mobile 6 handset rather than a PalmOS one, although it's not the first Windows smartphone from Palm. Initially the Palm Treo 500 will be exclusive to the Vodafone network, which will sell it as the "Treo 500v", although other carriers are likely to follow suit at a later date. The feature set of the Palm Treo 500v is pretty typical for devices of this type - there's a QVGA (240x320 pixel) display, a two megapixel camera on the back, microSD card, 150MB of available internal memory and of course the Treo 500v also has Bluetooth - in this case the Treo 500v can support stereo Bluetooth headsets too. It's a tri-band GSM device with 2100MHz UMTS (3G) but n...

HTC TyTN II

A quick tour of what's in the HTC TyTN II should whet the appetites of most gadget fans - this is a 3G phone with HSDPA high-speed data, a large 2.8" 240x320 pixel touchscreen display, slide-out QWERTY keyboard with a clever hinge mechanism, WiFi, a 3 megapixel primary camera, microSD expandable memory plus inbuilt GPS with a copy of TomTom Navigator 6 taster edition installed. The TyTN II runs Windows Mobile 6 Professional, which means that it comes with a wide array of software, and HTC have also customised the Windows installation with their own HTC Home screen to make it easier to use. It does look a lot like the Nokia E90 when opened, but the TyTN II's display is not as high resolution as its Nokia rival.. on the other hand, the TyTN has a touchscreen which is sorely lacking in the E90. On the back is a 3 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, plus a secondary camera for video calling. This is pretty much equivalent to the E90, and then on top of that is a basic G...

Nokia E61i

One of the hottest areas of growth in the mobile device market has been the smartphone communicator segment. This is where QWERTY thumbboards, an emphasis on messaging, and all around usablity are the keys to success. Devices such as RIM's BlackBerry 8700/8800 and Palm's Treo 680/750/755p models head out this group as the benchmarks for usability and style. Nokia's initial forray into this arena was the E61. As its first QWERTY communicator device, it was received well by only a few. Problems with usability and an unclear product focus made it a hard peg for consumers to fit well. It didn't help that in bringing this smartphone to the U.S., Nokia stripped the E61 of Wi-Fi and a few other programs, making an essentially underspeced model in the E62. The E61i was released in an effort to correct issues with the original E61, and also to give the world audience something not named Treo or BlackBerry to consider when looking for a solid smartphone communicator. Specificatio...

HTC Mogul (PPC-6800)

Sprint recently began offering the HTC Mogul, also called the PPC-6800. This Windows Mobile device offers a number of high-end features, like a built-in keyboard, Wi-Fi, and support for 3G cellular-wireless networking. It is the successor to the Sprint PPC-6700. Performance and Hardware For a first, the Mogul ships with a 400 MHz CPU made by Qualcomm, rather than the XScale, TI, or Samsung processors typical in most Windows Mobile devices. Using the Linpack benchmark, the MSM7200 chip managed 1.30 megaflops. This is just slightly below the 1.34 of the 400 MHz Samsung processor in the Hermes, but more or less inside the margin of error, and well above the 0.59 Mflop performance of the 200 MHz TI processors used in some PPC phones. According to Qualcomm's press releases, the MSM7500 boasts TV out and an ATI-based 3D graphics engine. However, the Mogul doesn't appear to implement TV output, and without optimized applications, it's anyone's guess as to what graphics perform...

Nokia N75

he Nokia N75's matte graphite exterior, a departure from the flashy metallic finishes that are currently common, suggests that the phone holds new and unique features inside as well. But that proves to be only partly true, although it is quite solid in design, connectivity, and multimedia features such as an integrated 2.0-megapixel camera and 3D speakers. The N75 is also very solid in the hand, weighing in at 4.23 ounces and sized at a somewhat clunky at 2.05 inches wide, 3.74 inches long and 0.80 inches thick. Sharp photos and elegant exterior design are strong points of the phone, on which the lens and shutter button are placed to resemble a traditional camera. Three simple music player and multi-function buttons on the front of the phone enhance its multimedia uses.

LG Chocolate (VX8550)

When the LG Chocolate was launched in 2006, the stylish phone in the shape of a chocolate bar became the "It" phone of the year. The new version, the LG Chocolate VX8550 for Verizon, looks just as sweet and packs more functionality into its minimalist slider design. Chocoholics will find the phone slimmer and lighter than its predecessor while enjoying many of the same features, such as the phone's 1.3-megapixel camera and camcorder, Bluetooth capability, and access to Verizon's VCAST multimedia at ultrafast 3G connection speeds. The designers added a much-needed speakerphone function to their updated version and fitted it with a user-friendly scroll wheel for easier navigation as well as a vibrating touch keypad. When not taking calls or streaming video, the phone transforms into a MP3 player and includes a micro SD expansion slot that takes up to a 4 GB card. Combining beautiful design with rich functionality, the LG VX8550 won't disappoint fans who have sampled...

iPhone Nano

3 September 2007 A cheaper iPhone model is coming, according to washingtonpost. Apple might be announcing the new model at the Moscone Center in San Francisco next week. The Washington Post has obtained an unknown document, which described an upcoming iPhone Nano to be announced next week. The new announcement will also unveil a new iPod with built in WiFi and touch screen. If documents prepared by an Apple partner and obtained by The Washington Post are to be believed, both of those products are in the works and slated for release in the coming months. One would be an iPod with WiFi and a touch screen like that on the iPhone; the other would be an iPhone Nano priced lower than the cheapest iPhone, which sells for $500.
